Tui na is a Chinese manipulative massage therapy, that uses the principles of Traditional Chinese medicine to bring the body into balance. The name comes from two of the actions involved in the therapy: tui means “to push” and na means “to lift and squeeze.” The practitioner rubs, rolls and presses the areas between the joints to open the body’s defensive qi (known as wei), and gets the energy moving in the meridians and the muscles. The treatment may be gentle or quite firm, or both. Tui na aids in the treatment of acute as well as chronic musculoskeletal conditions, and also many non-musculoskeletal conditions.
